U01A — Data everywhere
Data everywhere
Part A of Unit U01 — what data is and how it becomes information and insight.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Define data and give everyday examples.
- Explain the difference between data, information, and insight.
1. Data everywhere
Data = facts, numbers, text, images, video, or signals we collect and store.
Examples you already touch every day:
- Daily sales in a shop
- Bank account balance
- Weather temperature
- Likes on a social post
- Customer names in a contact list
- Quantitative — numbers you can measure (sales, temperature, counts)
- Qualitative — words, categories, opinions (survey answers, product names)
Data becomes powerful when we organize it and ask the right questions.
2. Data → information → insight
| Stage | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Raw facts | 500, 520, 480 (daily sales for 3 days) |
| Information | Data in context | Sales were $500, $520, $480 Mon–Wed |
| Insight | Actionable conclusion | Wed sales dropped — check if a competitor ran a promotion |
Your job as an analyst: move from data to clear insight someone can act on.
