U01C — Ecosystem, roles & retail scenario

Ecosystem & scenario

Part C of Unit U01 — the data ecosystem, key roles, and a retail story that ties it together.

Unit U01 Part C ~15 min read + built-in quiz Level: Beginner
Before this: Complete U01A and U01B.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  1. Name parts of a data ecosystem (sources, storage, tools, people, decisions).
  2. Differentiate analyst, scientist, engineer, and BI roles (one line each).
  3. Apply analytical thinking to a simple business scenario.

1. The data ecosystem (preview)

  • Sources — apps, websites, sensors, spreadsheets, surveys
  • Storage — databases, cloud, data warehouses
  • Tools — spreadsheets, SQL, Python, BI dashboards
  • People — analysts, engineers, managers, domain experts
  • Decisions — pricing, products, hiring, policy

Unit U03 goes deeper on ecosystem and data life cycle. Here you only need the map.

2. Who does what?

RoleFocus
Data analystTurn business questions into analysis and clear recommendations
Data scientistAdvanced models and experiments (often ML/statistics)
Data engineerPipelines, databases, reliable data flow
BI analystDashboards and reports for ongoing monitoring

Unit U02 covers the analyst role and daily workflow in detail.

3. Analytical thinking

  • Curiosity — ask “why?” and “what if?”
  • Context — understand the business before crunching numbers
  • Technical mindset — check if data is trustworthy and complete
  • Clear communication — one number + short explanation beats a confusing chart
Watch the trap: correlation is not causation. Two things moving together does not always mean one causes the other.

4. Mini-scenario — retail shop

A shop owner notices sales dropped 15% last month.

  1. Question: Which product categories declined the most?
  2. Data: Export monthly sales by category from the POS.
  3. Analysis: Compare this month vs last; rank by change.
  4. Insight: “Beverages −30%, snacks flat, household +5%.”
  5. Recommendation: Check beverage supplier pricing; run a targeted promo.

That is analytics in one story: question → data → evidence → answer → action.

Reflection (for your notes): Write one business question from your world that could be answered with data. Share it with your mentor — not graded in Odoo.

5. What comes next in this channel

  • U02 — The data analyst role & workflow
  • U03 — Data ecosystem & data life cycle
  • U04–U09 — Thinking, ethics, toolbox (this channel)
